Welcome to the Subscriber Only Works in Progress Vol. 3

Each month I'll be releasing three new mixes of ideas in progress. You'll be able to stream from bandcamp, and download to keep, these mixes until the first Weds of each month when they'll be replaced with fresh mixes / ideas.

Track Info :

1) Seedling

I liked the idea of having a short theme that could grow organically with this one. There's freedom to work around the groove and improvise which provides a little 'chaos' element. Then the improvisor comes to rest on the main ascending theme. The 5 against 4 grouping represents this growing impetus to me - thrusting life. Once that has 'bloomed' it provides stability and order for the next improvisor to go through the process themselves. I'd love to do this with a group so more layers get to evolve.

2) Courtyard Meditation

This is an internet improvisation between Kimwei Westbury and myself. A favourite process of mine is to find space and patience to frame organic interaction. Hopefully it's transporting and eases you into a meditative space.

3) I Wish (Upon a Disused Star)

This started life as an arrangement for another artist I work with but my production feel / tempo didn't quite sit with how they were feeling it so it's been on the shelf for a little while. As it had been conceived as a backing for something akin to a rap I started looking into A.I. voiceovers to experiment with. They often don't sound very human - articulation and phrasing doesn't always connect with context - so I played with the idea of an A.I. that is self-aware about the fact of not being self-aware. I like the paradox of a machine appealing to our imaginations with some form of emotional intent while being open about not being real.
