Single String Exercises for 6-String Bass Vol.1 - The C String

by Al Swainger - Making Better Music

  • Sheet Music

I’ve written these etudes to improve my own fretboard knowledge.
As a long time 4-string player the additional high C-string is not one
that comes naturally so I needed to start again with the basics of
    developing reliable note identification.
I also wanted to approach it from a musical point of view that would
enable my ears to grow alongside my muscle memory.

Welcome to single string exercises for 6-String bass.

WHY?

I’ve written these etudes to improve my own fretboard knowledge.
As a long time 4-string player the additional high C-string is not one
that comes naturally so I needed to start again with the basics of
developing reliable note identification.
I also wanted to approach it from a musical point of view that would
enable my ears to grow alongside my muscle memory.

WHAT?

This first set move around a harmonic framework of I - IV - V in each key.
The notes move in a much more erratic fashion than I would choose
for improvising, as I want to get to know the fretboard thoroughly,
but there’s no reason the choices shouldn’t also make harmonic sense
so I can use my ears too.
If you aren’t yet a good reader of notation the exercises will also give
you a good workout in that area as well.

HOW?

1) Practice with no tempo.
2) Practice with a very slow tempo so that you can find each note with
a consistant time limit. Choose a speed that you can manage to maintain
easily. Control and reliability are always the most important things.
3) Vary which exercise you work on each day. Your goal is to learn the notes
on the fretboard (and work on your reading)
DON’T learn the pieces by memory as that will interfere with the primary
goal. The process of recognising a written note and finding it on the bass
is the aim here.
